Red Fish, Blue Fish
In an inquiry exploration for grades five through eight, students test their ideas about animal behavior: What triggers aggressive behavior in Siamese fighting fish? During the activity students observe the aggressive fish, create hypotheses, and design an experiment to test their ideas. Students collect data and make conclusions about what stimulates the fish’s threat displays.

The Lady or the Tiger? Insect Decision-Making Investigations
This activity focuses on insects and the choices they make in response to sensory input. Students use polypropylene “Y” connectors and straws to construct a two-choice maze to use in their experiments. Students design the experiments choosing light, sound, smell, and temperature differences as insect responses to investigate. Investigators take notes about the insects’ behavior during a timed trial and count the number of insects in each arm of the maze.
