How Can We Save Frosty?
A teacher takes advantage of a winter snowstorm and turns it into a lesson that integrates science and mathematics. Eighth-grade students work in cooperative groups to design, construct, and evaluate an experiment that investigates variables that might keep a snowman from melting in the classroom.

The pH On the Wall
In one school students create a display of the pH scale to help focus lab investigations of acids and bases. Students test the pH of household items and place pictures of the liquids on the pH scale. In another school an eighth-grade class designs its own pH visuals during a unit on acids and bases. One group creates a circular display that divides the circle into 14 equal parts and illustrates it with pictures of foods and household products at the appropriate pH values.

pH Scale
This webpage host an interactive Java Applet simulation that allows the student to test the pH of things like coffee, spit, and soap to determine whether each is acidic, basic, or neutral. Also it helps the student user to visualize the relative number of hydroxide ions and hydronium ions in solution. The user is able to switch between logarithmic and linear scales. This website’s applet will give students a simulated, visual learning experience they might otherwise not be able to engage in due to time restraints or lack of material.
