NSF Web Watcher Institute: On-line Application Form

NSF Web Watcher Cadre, Summer 2000

Thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation, NSTA has created a three-year program to train a cadre of teachers to become Webwatchers. This cadre—selected for their knowledge of science, education, and technology—will research and select web sites which can be integrated into science curricula, and they will share the fruits of their research with other teachers through the NSTA web site.

Selected cadre members will 1) engage in professional development experiences that teach how web resources can be correlated to the National Science Education Standards and the Benchmarks for Science Literacy, which provide guidance for the effective use of science education materials in the classroom; 2) create and use an interactive web site to share information about science resources on the web; and 3) develop and distribute a Guidebook for Web Assessment to other science educators.

Over three years, institutes will be held each summer at NSTA Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Cadre members will receive travel and lodging expenses, a daily per diem, and a $60/day stipend for the 11 days of the Institute.

Twenty teachers will be selected for each institute, and participants will work in groups of five, each facilitated by a Group Leader. Participants will each have access to a PC to search the Internet, and each will be loaded with MS Office software (Word, Excel, etc.). Participants should be comfortable with basic word processing and operating system commands, whether or not they regularly use a PC, and given the similarities among systems, we believe even MAC free-spirits will find a home at the institutes ;).

Cadre members will receive brief, monthly assignments after the institute and will participate in at least one follow-up meeting to be held at an NSTA Area or National convention. The first Institute was held in summer 2000. The second Institute was held in summer 2001. Here are the dates for summer 2002:

  • First Session, grades K-6 educators: June 24-July 5, 2002

  • Second Session, grades 7-12 educators: July 15- July 26, 2002

If you would like to be considered for next summer's Institute, please complete the application form by March 3, 2002. Participants will be selected by April 10, 2002. If you have any trouble completing the form, please contact Mark Davis.
