Click on the following examples to find out. Each will reveal a list of vetted resources for students and teachers. These online resources were found by members of our search team of teachers, and each was reviewed using a set of eight rubrics.

Grades K-4

  • Plants

Among the links collected for this topic are space adventures through which children learn the conditions for growing plants in space, a kid-oriented planning guide to help pint-sized green thumbs get their gardens started, and an interactive site where students are taken on a virtual "hunt" to unlock the mysteries of plant life and their importance to humans.

  • Water Cycle

Through these links, students will discover the steps of the water cycle and learn some fun facts about water: They will learn about its location on the Earth and how much water is found in the ground, lakes, and rivers. There are also activities designed for teachers and parents to use with children to expand their knowledge of the Earth's water cycle and other issues pertaining to water.

  • Weather

Briefly, this topic has several links that are designed to help teachers and kids to extend their knowledge of weather and climate. Learners will find out about weather, the way it affects people, and the environment.

Grades 5-8

  • What is sound?

Most of the links collected for this topic describe the science of sound and how sounds are made. Students will be able to see how the vibrations that sound makes through simple projects. For instance, a web page titled "Kitchen Sink-O-Pation" offers online activities that show how context impacts how we interpret the sounds we hear and what role visual information plays in determining that context. In addition, these pages describe sound waves and how sound can be useful to us. Students will discover also the difference between musical sound and noise, the main kind of musical instruments and a simple definition of music.

  • Electricity

For this topic, there are several web pages for teachers with activities that:

  • Show how to store an electrical charge and make a spark using commonly-available materials
  • Demonstrate the effect of magnets on an electric current
  • Reveal the inside of the turbine that converts the energy of wind to electricity

By visiting other links, students will learn the story of electricity from its discovery to its uses today. They will understand how important electricity is in our lives and how to create and detect it.

  • Ecology

The links for this topic will lead teachers and students to do real scientific research in the schoolyard. Students will learn about waste and how to manage it in the environment, garbage, the recycling process, and how to document the living and non-living aspects of an ecosystem.

Grades 9-12

  • DNA

Web pages collected for this topic will help students and teachers to explore the amazing implications of DNA. They will learn how DNA is used to detect inherited diseases and to catch criminals, and they will learn about the scientists who worked to discover the structure of DNA.

  • Energy

These links include lessons plans and activities that are designed to give students a basic understanding of how energy is turned into power, where energy is produced, how energy is measured and cost.

  • Earthquakes

These web pages feature lessons plan, activities, and interactive resources that help students learn about the history of earthquakes, how and why earthquakes are so devastating, how communities have responded, and the recommendations of geologists to be more prepared for future earthquakes.
